Some websites on the Internet contain considerable breadth and depth of information on one topic or set of topics. These are called hubs. TeachMeInternet.com - Search HubsHubs usually include documents, brochures, news, lists of professionals in the field, as well as links to related websites and resources. Hubs are a good place to get an overview of a subject area.

To find such hubs, use one of these strategies:

Use a web directory, such as Yahoo! or Google. Directories are organized hierarchically; thus, the top tiers are likely to have more comprehensive websites.

In a general search engine such as Google or Yahoo! add words such as association, foundation, or organization. This will pull for professional or non-profit associations and institutions, since many have these words in their names.

In the Advanced Yahoo! search menu, specify one of the following in the Site/Domain options: .edu, .org, .gov. This will eliminate most commercial sites (.com) from your results.

  • Answers.com bills itself as "the best definitions and explanations for over one million topics." You can browse specific reference sources or type something into the search box. Results combine reference sources, as well as web links.
  • Refdesk: It is amazing how much data you'll find at yourfingertips on this page.  Bookmark it to have ready access to facts, news,reference tools, help sites and searchable data bases.
  • Yahoo's reference page: From 39 major categories you can click to thousands of online resources, including acronyms, dictionaries, directories, essay-writing help and various databases.
  • Collection of quotation resources from the Yahoo! directory: Dozens of quotation sources at your fingertips.
  • Bartleby.com has quotations, dictionaries, thesauri, language usage guides, Gray's anatomy, classic poetry, speeches and more.
